The General Society of the War of 1812, commonly known as the Society of the War of 1812, is a patriotic society headquartered in Aberdeen, New Jersey. The General Society was established in 1854 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by Joel Sutherland, and incorporated in 1892 by the Philadelphia County Court.
History
Formation of the Society
On January 9, 1854 (one day after the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans), a group of over 1,500 War of 1812 veterans from across the United States met in national convention at the Philadelphia County Court House, having responded to a call issued by Joel Sutherland (himself a veteran and former member of Congress). Ostensibly called to draft resolutions pertaining to federal bounty land legislation, the veterans assembled acknowledged the need to organize at the national level for mutual support and to perpetuate the history of the war. It was here that the society was founded and Sutherland was elected its first president.[1]
Bounty Land Act of 1855
The Society of the War of 1812 met again in convention a year later in Washington, D.C., where they were received by President Franklin Pierce at the White House and lobbied members of Congress to secure the federal bounty land legislation, which was passed into law on March 3, 1855. Sutherland's goal was to form a division of the Society in each state of the Union. While that goal had not been not fullfilled at the time of his death, it was shortly thereafter the society began accepting sons and grandsons of War of 1812 veterans.[1]
Membership
The society admits men who are lineal descendants from an ancestor who served during the War of 1812, in a military service of the United States.[2][3]
