IIT Madras Zanzibar is a campus established by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) in Zanzibar, Tanzania.[2] It is the first international campus established by an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT).[3] Inaugurated on November 6, 2023, by Hussein Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar[4] and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, this campus marks a collaboration between the Government of India and Zanzibar to bring world-class education to the East African region.[5]

Campus

The campus, located approximately 15 kilometers south of Zanzibar Town in the Bweleo district,[6] commenced its academic year in October 2023.[7] Plans for a permanent campus, to be constructed jointly by the Government of India and Zanzibar, are underway.[8]

The academic programs initially offered include Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Technology (MTech) programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).[9] Initially, the institute commenced its academic programs with students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India, with 40% of the inaugural student cohort being women.[10]
