Marcus Joseph Tavernier (born 22 March 1999) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder or left winger for Premier League club AFC Bournemouth.

Tavernier has also represented England at U19 and U20 level.[5]

Club career

Middlesbrough

Tavernier was born in Leeds. Having previously played for Newcastle United, he joined the academy of Middlesbrough at under-14 level and became a regular for the side in the Premier League 2. He also played in two games for his club in the 2015–16 UEFA Youth League.[6]

Tavernier made his professional debut for the club in the second round of the EFL Cup, starting in a 3–0 win against Scunthorpe United at the Riverside Stadium on 22 August 2017.[7] He scored his first goal for the club on 24 October in the EFL Cup, during a 3–1 loss to Bournemouth at Dean Court,[8] and his first league goal in the Championship in a 1–0 win over rivals Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium on 5 November.[9]

On 17 January 2018, Tavernier joined relegation-threatened EFL League One side Milton Keynes Dons on loan until the end of the 2017–18 season.[10] He made his debut for the club three days later in a 2–1 defeat to relegation rivals Northampton Town.[11] The club were subsequently relegated to the fourth tier of English football at the end of their unsuccessful campaign,[12] with Tavernier failing to score in any of his eight total appearances.[13]

In December 2017, Tavernier signed a new contract for 31⁄2 years.[14] In January 2020, this was extended until summer 2023.[15]

AFC Bournemouth

On 29 July 2022, Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder confirmed that the club had accepted a bid for Tavernier from an unnamed Premier League club.[16] On 1 August 2022, Tavernier joined Bournemouth on a five-year deal.[17] Tavernier made his debut for the club on 6 August in a 2–0 home win over Aston Villa in the Premier League. He was praised by manager Scott Parker for his performance in the match.[18]

On 16 June 2023, he signed a new deal until 2028.

International career

Tavernier made his international debut at U19 level, starting in a 2–2 draw against Slovakia U19s at the NTC Senec stadium on 9 October 2017.[19] In July 2018, he was included in the squad for the 2018 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.[20] He scored in a group stage draw against Ukraine.[21]

In May 2019, he was included in the England U20 squad for the 2019 Toulon Tournament.[22]

Personal life

Tavernier was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire.[23] His older brother, James Tavernier, is a footballer who plays for and is captain of Rangers.[24]
