The Foundation for Harmony and Prosperity is an American libertarian nonprofit organization based in Sacramento, CA that espouses and promotes awareness pertaining to what it calls "the principle of human respect." The principle, according to the foundation, states that, "Initiated violence and theft always cause a decline in happiness, harmony, and prosperity."[1]
Views
The Foundation for Harmony and Prosperity states that its mission is to promote what it calls the "principle of human respect" which the foundation argues is comparable in consistency and as widespread of a truth as to be compared to physical laws of nature such as gravity, and can be summarized as, "Initiated violence and theft always cause a decline in happiness, harmony, and prosperity."[2] Because violence or theft that is initiated against one party by another is uninvited and unwelcome, there is always a decline in happiness as a result. Taken at scale, societal, or communal happiness would then decrease if this occurred to enough individuals. Masochists or self-harm that is requested by other parties would be exempt from this definition, since this form of "violence" is invited and voluntary, and therefore happiness would not decline, and may even increase. The universality of the above is what led the foundation to conclude that the principle is similar to a natural law in its consistency, and therefore widespread knowledge of the principle and its application would result in a global increase in human happiness.[1]
The mission statement of the foundation is:
To persuade people to act, in all aspects of their lives, in concert with social principles that advance Human Happiness, Harmony, and Prosperity.[1]
The vision of the foundation is:
To see people living in vibrant communities in which their cultural norm is to advance their personal interests and values by relying exclusively on persuasion and voluntary relationships. Individuals will also categorically refuse to endorse or empower any agent — personal, social, commercial, or political — to initiate physical force or fraud on their behalf.[1]
History
The Foundation for Harmony and Prosperity was founded in 2007 with funding provided primarily by Chris J. Rufer who believed that the principle of human respect, and this principle more than anything else, is essential in furthering human flourishing and human happiness. Rufer had applied this principle to his operation of the company that he leads as CEO and owner, The Morning Star Company, a tomato processing company based in California.[3][4][5]
Location
The Foundation for Harmony and Prosperity is located at 500 Capitol Mall Suite 2050 Sacramento, CA 95814.[6][7]
